The Ranching Lifestyle

Hello! Welcome to the Rafter S Mercantile blog. We are so excited that you've decided to shop with us and support our small business. In this first post, we just wanted to let you all get to know us and learn more about our business!

My name Sherri Sanders, and that's me with my husband Kyle. We live on a small cow-calf operation in Searcy, Arkansas. Our family is steeped in agriculture and the ranching lifestyle. The Rafter S Mercantile brand is more than just words. We truly live that daily, and we are excited to share a piece of that with you through these blogs.

We are dedicated to this way of life.

I grew up on a ranch, and it runs in my blood. I am very proud of my roots as an Arkansas girl who represented ranching and rodeo. I was an ambassador for rodeo growing up as a rodeo queen. I would hold the title for a year and travel the state and even the country spreading the word about rodeo.

I still stay connected to my past by visiting with other former title holders and even coaching current rodeo queens from time to time! My daughter even competed and reigned as a rodeo queen for a few years when she was younger.

After college, I became a county extension agent specializing in horticulture, but I never lost my love for livestock. My husband, Kyle, was a high school agriculture teacher when we first got married, and my kids showed livestock their whole lives. We always had some kind of animal on our property -- sheep, horses, hogs, goats, rabbits and chickens.

I helped several FFA kids, both from my husband's school and my kids' school, learn to show livestock over the years. My husband retired from teaching and went on the road with a marketing company to different rodeos and events. Now he's a county extension agent like me! Both of my kids eventually graduated high school and moved out, so we decided it was time to start a small beef cow-calf operation.

I genuinely love each and everyone of my mama cows and calves. They ALL have names, yes even the steers. We care for all of our cattle to the best of our ability and make sure they are healthy. Ranching and agriculture are two of my biggest passions, and I can't wait to show more of that to you!

I will try to introduce a cow in these blogs every once in a while just to give you a glimpse at some of the faces here on our farm!

This is Luna! She was born on our ranch in November 2019. Her mom, Jill, normally throws bull calves, so she was the first daughter for her mom! She is part Simmental and has a sweet disposition.

Stay tuned to learn more about us, Rafter S Mercantile and the cows!
